.

The physical and social decay she is experiencing in her neighborhood is readily apparent in most of the south-central, south-east neighborhoods. Specifically in the areas Hancock, Drennan, Chelton, Murray, Galley… The demographic makeup of these areas are changing along with the increased code complaints, domestic violence and crime. The bottom line is, if you don’t like where you live, move.
I grew up in the Ivywild area and in the 50′s and 60′s it was a wonderful place to be a kid. It was a clean, safe neighborhood back then. As kids we could explore the foothills behind Motor City. We had the 8th street drive-in, Howdy Pard, Ivy’s and the original Red Top restaurants. Nice motels were on south Nevada street. Skiffington’s Drug Store had a real soda fountain. We could hike up Cheyenne Creek. Ivywild was a wonderful school. I still visit the area and it’s not the same. It used to be so rural, now it’s just another part of town that life is moving past. Fewer and fewer younger people want to live in old neighborhoods. I hope someday soon that changes and Ivywild can be brought back to life again.
I too, grew up in Ivywild, and still have friends and family there. In my opinion it still is a wonderful place to call home.
Ivywild is an example of progress and charm. Ivywild is an historic gem of the past, with its turn of the century architecture, and a thriving business community of restaurants and specialty shops. . South Nevada is not part of Ivywild. And South Tejon, which was excluded in the sidestreets article, serves as a buffer between Nevada and the charming residential valley mapped in the article. While we miss the children of Ivywild School , we all look forward to some viable use of the beautiful historic building. Change is inevitable, and Ivywild’s image need not be tainted by a nostalgic perspective.

I just moved to Ivywild. I picked the location because of the bungalows, the proximity to the canyon, walking distance to the Blue Star, Bristol, Canyon Coffee, the Ski Shop, the green house and tons of other independent, local businesses. I am minutes from my job downtown. We looked at many neighborhoods and narrowed it down to Ivywild, Downtown or Manitou. I wouldn’t want to live in an area that didn’t have character. Although there are some areas that have fallen into disrepair, for the most part I think that it is a neighborhood that is entering a renewal phase. Especially as we move out of the current economic situation and the improvement projects that have been put on hold are implemented. No, it isn’t the Ivywild of the past, but I look forward to the future.
I spent only a short time in Ivywild. I attended 6th grade at Ivywild Elementary in 1961. It is among the best memories of my childhood. The community was blessed with some of the finest, friendliest people anywhere. I hope that, at least, hasn’t changed.
My grandmother was a teacher at Ivewild Elementary for many years until she retired in1980 and died in 1981. I don’t know much about her, she died before I was born, but hear she was loved by all. R.I.P Mrs. Borghild Derge
I enjoyed hearing Commenter” nostalgia and wish it was still like that, too. Hopefully it will return with new building efforts, “unearth” the less than savory elements and bring in new energy, but the article portion about Clara’s laments is sadly very true. Drifters from South Tejon and South Nevada spill into Ivywild, and the drug trafficking is really obvious. A decade ago I looked at a place for myself and young child, not deeper into Ivywild, but closer to Tejon and my HAIR STOOD ON END. I could not live there and sleep at night. Hoping for a revival of the quality of the old Ivywild.
